FIFA 2030: Why the Canary Islands Venue Is the Best-Kept Secret for West African Fans
8 min read · RibbonsXP Team

The FIFA World Cup 2030 has a venue nobody is talking about yet: the Estadio Gran Canaria in Las Palmas, on the Canary Islands.
The Canary Islands are Spanish territory but geographically positioned off the northwest coast of Africa — about 100km from the Moroccan coast and approximately 1,500km from Lagos, Nigeria. By air, Las Palmas (Gran Canaria Airport, LPA) is approximately 5 hours from Lagos and 5 hours from Accra.
That matters because it gives West African fans a Spanish World Cup venue that is significantly closer and more accessible than mainland Spain.
What is the venue?
Estadio Gran Canaria, Las Palmas de Gran Canaria
Capacity: ~32,000
Club: UD Las Palmas (LaLiga)
The stadium is the home of UD Las Palmas, a LaLiga club. At 32,000 capacity it is one of the smaller venues in the tournament — which means a more intimate group stage atmosphere than the 80,000+ cathedrals in Madrid or Barcelona.
Las Palmas is the capital of Gran Canaria, the most populated of the Canary Islands. It has an Atlantic city centre with a beach (Las Canteras) within walking distance of the main commercial and tourist district.
Why it matters for Nigerian, Ghanaian and West African fans
The Schengen visa problem for mainland Spain:
Nigerian and Ghanaian passport holders need a Schengen visa to visit Spain. Applying in Lagos or Accra requires embassy appointments, bank statements, confirmed bookings, and processing time. This is a real barrier for fans who want to attend the World Cup in Spain.
The Canary Islands have the same Schengen rules — but are much closer:
Technically, the Canary Islands are part of Spain and the Schengen Area, so the same visa applies. However, the flight from Lagos to Las Palmas is about 5 hours — comparable to the Lagos to Casablanca route. And the Canary Islands are far more budget-friendly than mainland Spain: accommodation, food and transport are cheaper than Madrid or Barcelona.
For fans already going to Morocco:
If you are based in Casablanca or Marrakech for Morocco's matches, Gran Canaria is a short flight away (~2.5 hours) with your Schengen visa in hand. You can attend a Moroccan group stage match and fly to the Canary Islands for an additional Spanish match — covering two host nations without touching mainland Europe.
Getting to the Canary Islands
From Lagos (LOS): Approximately 5 hours. No direct flights currently — typically via Madrid (Iberia) or Casablanca (Royal Air Maroc). New direct routes may be announced as the tournament approaches.
From Accra (ACC): Approximately 5 hours, connecting via Casablanca or Madrid.
From London: ~4 hours direct. Multiple carriers including British Airways, EasyJet, TUI, Jet2.
From Morocco (Casablanca CMN): ~2.5 hours. Royal Air Maroc and budget carriers.
Gran Canaria as a destination
Beyond the football, the Canary Islands offer:
Las Canteras Beach: A protected urban beach in Las Palmas city centre — one of the finest urban beaches in Europe. Walking distance from most hotels.
Maspalomas Dunes: On the south of the island — a Sahara-like landscape of golden dunes meeting the Atlantic. 45 minutes from Las Palmas by bus.
Tejeda and the interior: The mountainous interior of Gran Canaria is dramatically different from the coast — villages, pine forests, hiking. Worth a day trip.
Climate: June–July is warm and dry in Gran Canaria — typically 24–28°C on the coast, cooler inland. One of the best climates of any host venue in the tournament.
The Canary Islands as an African fan's FIFA 2030 base
If you are planning a FIFA 2030 trip from West Africa, the Canary Islands deserve serious consideration:
- Shorter flight than mainland Spain
- Cheaper accommodation than Madrid or Barcelona
- Beach + culture combination
- Easy onward connection to Morocco or mainland Spain with Schengen visa
- One of the most pleasant climates of any host city in June–July
Book early. Once match schedules are confirmed and the Canary Islands venue gets mainstream attention, prices will move.
