Money tips
Book flights by August 2026 at the latest
Prices jump significantly in Q4 2026 as awareness builds. The sweet spot is 4–6 months before the tournament.
Carry USD as your universal backup
USD is widely accepted across Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania. Carry $200–$300 in small bills for markets, tips and places that don't accept cards.
Get a local SIM at the airport
Safaricom (Kenya), MTN (Uganda), Vodacom (Tanzania) all offer affordable data bundles. Don't rely on roaming — it's expensive.
Mobile money is everywhere
Kenya's M-Pesa is the most mature mobile money system in the world. Link a local SIM and you can pay for almost anything, including matatus and market stalls.
Negotiate at markets — gently
Most craft and souvenir markets expect negotiation. Start around 50–60% of the asking price and work from there — be respectful, vendors are earning a living.
Watch for AFCON price hikes on accommodation
Hotels inflate prices significantly during major tournaments. Book 6+ months out and read cancellation policies carefully.
