Flight tips for AFCON 2027

Book at least 4–6 months ahead

AFCON 2027 runs 19 June to 17 July 2027. Prices spike heavily from March 2027 onward. Book by January–February 2027 for the best fares. The final and semi-final weeks will be especially tight.

Ethiopian Airlines is usually cheapest

Ethiopian has the widest East Africa network and often has the best fares from Europe, West Africa and North America via Addis Ababa. Add-ons (Bole Lounge, Skylight Hotel) are strong too.

Flying into one city, out of another

You can fly into Nairobi and out of Entebbe (or Dar) for multi-country itineraries. Open-jaw tickets cost a bit more but save significant overland travel time.

Cross-border by road or air

Nairobi–Entebbe: ~8h by road, or 1h by air (Kenya Airways/RwandAir). Nairobi–Dar: ~12h by road, or 1h by air. For 3-country trips, budget for at least one internal flight.

Check visa before you book

East Africa tourist visas vary by nationality. EAC single tourist visa covers Kenya, Uganda and Rwanda ($100). Tanzania requires a separate visa. Check our visa guide before you book any flights.

Seat selection matters for long-hauls

For flights over 8 hours, pay for seat selection if you can. Exit rows and bulkhead seats fill fast. Kenya Airways business class upgrades at check-in can be worth it on the LHR–NBO route.
