Kampala
The most underrated AFCON 2027 host city. Your complete guide to where to stay, eat, and explore in Uganda's capital.
Where to stay
Kololo & Nakasero
The most upscale and convenient areas for AFCON tourists. Kololo Hill has excellent international hotels; Nakasero is the central business district. Both within 20–30 minutes of the stadium.
Kisementi & Acacia Mall area
Popular mid-range neighbourhood buzzing with restaurants, bars and nightlife. Very safe, walkable, great vibe especially in the evenings.
Bukoto & Ntinda
Residential neighbourhoods with a local feel and cheaper accommodation, a bit further out but accessible by SafeBoda or Bolt.
Entebbe
Airport city on Lake Victoria, 40 minutes south of Kampala. Viable if flying in and out frequently, but not ideal for stadium access unless you have private transfers.
What to eat
Rolex — Uganda's street food king
A chapati rolled around a fried egg and vegetables, found everywhere for 500–2,000 UGX. Best eaten fresh off the griddle from a street vendor.
Matoke & stews
Steamed green banana mash, Uganda's staple, served with groundnut stew, beef or beans. Rich, filling and available everywhere.
Pork joints
Kampala has entire streets of outdoor spots where whole pigs are roasted and served with chilli sauce — a Kampala institution.
Indian & international
A strong Indian community means genuinely excellent Indian restaurants, particularly in Nakasero. The Lawns and Faze3 are reliable upscale options.
Getting around
SafeBoda & boda bodas
Motorcycle taxis are the fastest way through Kampala's gridlocked streets. SafeBoda is the app-based, safer version — download it before you arrive.
Bolt & taxis
The main option for car-based trips, especially at night or with luggage. Avoid unknown drivers who approach you at hotels.
Airport (Entebbe) to Kampala
40km, 45–60 minutes in normal traffic. Bolt costs around 40,000–60,000 UGX. Our packages include airport transfers.
Match day
Traffic will be severe. SafeBoda genuinely weaves through where cars are stuck — allow 2+ hours to reach the stadium.
Safety tips
General safety
Generally safe for tourists, especially in Kololo, Nakasero and Kisementi. AFCON will bring significant security presence throughout the city.
Health
Malaria is present — take prophylaxis. Yellow fever vaccination is mandatory for entry and may be checked at the airport. Drink bottled water only.
Avoid
Avoid Owino Market with valuables. Don't photograph government buildings, military installations or the airport.
Emergency contacts
Uganda Police: 999 or 112. International Hospital Kampala: +256 31 220 0400. Nakasero Hospital: +256 41 423 8000.

Match day in Kampala
Atmosphere
Ugandans are exceptionally warm and football-mad even when their own team isn't playing. Expect noise, colour and a carnival atmosphere hours before kick-off.
Pre-match
Kampala fan culture means pre-match drinks and food on the street near the stadium — try the rolex, grilled pork and cold Nile Special beer.
Post-match
Kabalagala and Kisementi will be buzzing after evening matches. Club Guvnor is one of the most famous nightlife spots in East Africa.
Practical tips
Bring cash for food and transport, charge your phone, and confirm your hotel has a 24h front desk before heading out post-match.
